India has faced significant challenges due to COVID-19, with a particularly severe impact on the education sector. Approximately 247 million primary and secondary school students in India are currently unable to attend school. This raises important questions about the impact of global school closures on student learning and progression, particularly for primary-school-aged children in less affluent settings. Additionally, how will the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbate inequalities in learning between girls and boys, impoverished and affluent children, and communities and countries with differing income levels?

In February of this year, we conducted a household survey in Chennai, a southern city in India’s Tamil Nadu state, with funding from the Asian Development Bank and in partnership with J-PAL-India. We aimed to gain a clearer understanding of the daily educational activities of primary school students during the COVID-19 school closures, with a focus on how both students and teachers are utilizing educational technology from school levels such as the best preschool Trivandrum right from the time of preschool admission. Our specific interest was in exploring the potential disparities in learning experiences between children from low- and high-income families, as well as those attending private versus government-funded schools.

Our survey findings

Disturbingly, 20% of the children included in our study were attending schools that did not provide any remote learning options during the period of school closure. Additionally, among the children whose schools did offer remote instruction, just over half attended all of their classes.

Our research shows that during the school closures caused by the pandemic, students in private schools such as the kids school in Trivandrum and international playschool Kerala and those from higher socioeconomic status (SES) households had greater access to digital devices and were more actively engaged in educational activities compared to their peers in government schools and from lower SES households. Figures 1 and 2 demonstrate that children attending private schools such as the best kindergarten in Trivandrum and preschool near me and from higher SES households had higher rates of access to digital devices, such as smartphones, internet, and computers/laptops, than those in government schools and from lower SES households. These initial findings suggest a widening gap in educational opportunities and highlight the importance of policymakers providing support for children from lower SES households in both government and private schools. Additional studies on the impact of COVID-19 school closures have shown that even simple interventions, like SMS text messages and phone calls, can help mitigate potential learning setbacks in all schools including the kindergartens Trivandrum where tutors are trained from montessori training.

Previous studies have indicated that the effects of school closures in low-income nations may vary based on gender because girls tend to take on more household responsibilities and help with childcare. In summary, these initial findings indicate a probable increase in educational inequality in India and globally, emphasizing the importance of policymakers expanding access to ongoing and fair educational opportunities for all students including in icse schools in Trivandrum where tutors are trained from from ttc in Trivandrum.

In the future, it will be essential for governments to implement strategies to assist students in overcoming the educational setbacks experienced during the periods of school closures in preschools in Trivandrum and kindergartens near me and transitioning back to the classroom.
